S imple, yet sensational, is what I think about lavender. It is agreeable enough that it can be grown in either a full-fledged garden, or a basic container. In addition, it happens to be extremely resistant to drought, or those of us who sometimes forget to water regularly. Plus, they are able to endure encounters with those pesky, but adorable snacking rabbits and deer.
As for appearance, the foliage is quite lovely, the flowers are delightful, and that scent, oh my goodness that scent is divine. No matter what style garden you keep, this is one item that crosses boundaries. The key is to determine which type is appropriate for the space in which you plant it. Once you have it flourishing, remember to graze your hand across its flowers when passing it, and take in a deep breath of that beautiful fragrance. It is truly one of lifes little treats.
